Is My Child's Eye Exam Really Free in Alberta?

A plain-language look at what Alberta Health Care actually covers for kids' eye exams, and where costs can still come up.

In Short

Yes, comprehensive eye exams for children under 19 are fully covered by AHCIP, Alberta's public health plan. That covers the exam itself: vision testing, eye health check, and prescription. Glasses, contact lenses, and some specialty tests are billed separately.

The Basics

What AHCIP actually covers.

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) covers one comprehensive eye exam per benefit year for every child under 19, regardless of family income. That exam includes visual acuity testing, eye alignment and movement checks, colour vision screening, a full eye health assessment, and a prescription if one is needed, all with no out-of-pocket cost at participating clinics, including ours.

This is different from many provinces, where routine child eye exams are only partially subsidized or require extra paperwork. In Alberta, as long as your child is under 19 and has a valid Alberta health card, the visit itself costs nothing.

Covered

What's included at no cost

  • One comprehensive eye exam per benefit year
  • Visual acuity and refraction testing
  • Eye alignment, movement, and binocular vision checks
  • Colour vision screening
  • Full external and internal eye health assessment
  • A written prescription, if needed
Not Covered

What can cost extra

  • Glasses frames and lenses
  • Contact lens fittings and follow-up
  • A second exam within the same benefit year (non-medical reason)
  • Some specialty tests not deemed medically necessary
  • Cosmetic add-ons like tinted or blue-light lenses
Good To Know

No referral or paperwork needed.

You don't need a doctor's referral or any special form to book a covered children's eye exam in Alberta, just bring your child's Alberta health card. We bill AHCIP directly, so there's nothing for you to submit or claim back later.

Why This Matters

Cost should never delay a checkup.

Because the exam itself is fully covered, there's no financial reason to put off a child's eye exam, even if it turns out to be nothing. Vision problems caught early are far easier and cheaper to manage than ones caught late, and a free annual exam means catching them early doesn't cost your family anything at all.

FAQ

AHCIP eye exam coverage, answered.

Is my child's eye exam really free under AHCIP?
Yes. One comprehensive eye exam per benefit year is fully covered by Alberta Health Care for every child under 19, with no out-of-pocket cost for the exam itself.
Does AHCIP cover the cost of glasses?
No. AHCIP covers the eye exam and prescription, but glasses frames, lenses, and contact lens fittings are billed separately and are not covered by the province.
Do I need a referral to book a covered exam?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with an optometrist, bring your child's Alberta health card, and the exam is billed straight to AHCIP.
What if my child needs a second exam in the same year?
A second exam within the same benefit year is only covered if it's medically necessary, such as monitoring a diagnosed condition. A routine repeat exam without medical reason may involve a fee, which we can explain before booking.
