Children's Eye Exams in Calgary

Conveniently located at Southcentre Mall. Comprehensive, kid-friendly care that's fully covered by Alberta Health Care for children under 19.

In Short

Eye Check Calgary provides comprehensive children's eye exams at no cost for kids under 19, covered by Alberta Health Care. We assess vision, eye alignment, colour vision, and overall eye health using age-appropriate tools, right inside Southcentre Mall.

Why It Matters

Clear vision is the foundation of growth and confidence.

Clear vision is vital for your child's growth, development, and confidence. Detecting and addressing vision problems early makes treatment more effective and helps prevent issues from impacting coordination, reading, focus, or daily activities.

From toddlers to teens, we provide compassionate, age-appropriate care to help kids thrive in and out of the classroom, whether it's a first eye exam, a glasses update, or follow-up for a diagnosed condition. We take the time to explain every step and make it a positive experience.

When To Come In

When should my child have an eye exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends the following schedule for low-risk children:

  • First exam between 6 and 9 months of age
  • At least one exam between ages 2 and 5
  • Annual exams for school-age children 6 to 19
Watch For

Signs your child may have vision difficulties

Between appointments, it helps to watch for symptoms of eye strain or vision changes:

  • Squinting, frequent eye rubbing, or head tilting
  • Holding books or screens very close to the face
  • Using a finger as a placeholder while reading
  • Lowered concentration when looking at objects

FAQ

Questions about children's eye exams, answered.

At what age should my child have their first eye exam?
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a baby's first eye exam between 6 and 9 months of age, at least one exam between ages 2 and 5, and then annual exams once a child reaches school age.
Are children's eye exams covered in Alberta?
Yes. Comprehensive eye exams for children under 19 are fully covered by Alberta Health Care, so cost is never a reason to delay your child's eye care.
What does a children's eye exam include?
Every child receives visual acuity testing, eye alignment and movement testing, a binocular vision and depth perception evaluation, colour vision screening, refraction testing, and a full external and internal eye health check.
How do you examine a child who cannot read yet?
We use age-appropriate tools and techniques, picture charts for toddlers and digital acuity tests for school-aged children, so we can accurately assess vision without relying on reading.
What are signs my child might have a vision problem?
Watch for squinting, frequent eye rubbing or head tilting, holding books very close to the face, using a finger as a placeholder while reading, or lowered concentration when looking at objects. If you notice any of these, book an exam.
