An Eye Exam Should Be More Than a Quick Prescription Check

A lot of people think of an eye exam as a five-minute checkup followed by new glasses. Unfortunately, that’s what many clinics deliver—and it’s not enough. At EyeCheck Calgary, a comprehensive exam means taking the time to look at your vision and your overall eye health in full detail.

That starts with imaging. Every patient receives OCT scans and fundus photography so we can assess the health of the retina and optic nerve. We also perform pressure testing to screen for glaucoma and use slit-lamp biomicroscopy to evaluate the structures at the front of the eye. These tools help us detect conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic eye changes, and early cataracts—even before symptoms appear.

For patients over 65, we often recommend annual dilation as part of the exam. It allows us to assess the retina more thoroughly, especially in cases where subtle damage may be developing. Seniors and children are fully covered under Alberta Health Care, so they receive these assessments at no cost. Adults with insurance benefit from our direct billing process, which makes things smoother at the front desk.

We start our eye exams by checking how clearly you see at distance and near, with and without correction.

Ocular Pressure Testing

A quick but essential test to assess glaucoma risk, especially important for adults over 40.

OCT and Fundus Imaging

These scans show us the health of your retina, optic nerve, and macula in extreme detail—far beyond what we can see with a flashlight or lens.

Slit-Lamp Biomicroscopy

Used to examine your cornea, iris, lens, and anterior chamber to spot dry eye, cataracts, and surface damage.

Visual Field Testing (When Needed)

For patients with certain symptoms or risk factors, we check peripheral vision and neurological function.

Pupil Dilation (When Appropriate)

Often recommended yearly for seniors and when we see signs that require deeper internal eye evaluation.
